On National Women’s Day, I pause as a woman writer to draw strength from Sarojini Naidu, a voice that refused to be silenced in a time when women were expected to whisper.
She was not just the “Nightingale of India.” She was a freedom fighter, an orator, a poet, and the first woman to become the Governor of an Indian state.
At a time when stepping onto a public platform itself was rebellion, she stood before crowds and spoke with conviction. Her words were not merely lyrical; they were powerful enough to move a nation.
As working women today, we juggle careers, homes, ambitions, expectations, and sometimes silent battles no one sees. We are told to “balance,” to “adjust,” to “wait.” But Sarojini Naidu teaches us something deeper, to speak. To write. To lead. To occupy spaces boldly. She proved that a woman’s pen can challenge empires. That intellect and empathy can coexist. That leadership can be graceful yet fierce.
Today, as professionals, entrepreneurs, writers, leaders, and dreamers, we are walking paths paved by women like her. Every email we send, every boardroom we enter, every idea we publish carries echoes of women who dared before us.
On this National Women’s Day, I honour her not just for her poetry, but for her courage. May we continue to raise our voices. May we continue to write our truths. May we never shrink our brilliance.
Because history has shown us… when a woman speaks with purpose, the world listens.
